What is the difference between a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and a Health Coach?
A Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) is a credential given to those who at a minimum complete a bachelors degree in human nutrition or dietetics, followed by twelve months of clinical rotations which leads to the passing of a national board exam and completing continuing education to stay abreast of changes in nutrition science. In order to be credentialed as a dietitian, one must go through a credentialing process with the Commission on Dietetics Registration. Many states, including Maryland have specific licensure requirements to hold the title Dietitian.
The term Health Coach is not regulated and means that some practitioners may have done a short certification course and not a background rooted in science. The term Nutritionist is also regulated. Some practitioners may have advanced coursework while others may have a certificate they earned at weekend seminar. Make sure you ask about credentials and feel comfortable with a practitioner’s training.
