Could hunger hormones be derailing your health goals this holiday season? 😳

If you’ve been feeling ravenous, dealing with non-stop cravings, and struggling to find satiety - listen up!

In order to understand the answer to this question, we must first understand two hormones in the body, leptin and ghrelin.

Leptin is often referred to as the satiety hormone. This increases in the body after you eat and signals the brain that you are full.

On the other side of the spectrum, is ghrelin. Ghrelin is referred to as the hunger hormone. It tells your body how to use the sugar and glucose in your blood. It upregulates during times of hunger. So for example, if you have been restricting food, you will likely notice an increase in hunger. This is where that non-stop ravenous, hangry feeling can start up in the body.

Around the holidays, this can truly be a recipe for disaster. If you’re restricting calories all day long and then attend a holiday party, your hunger hormones will be SO high that you’ll likely find yourself inhaling a lot more than you planned. When we’re feeling hangry, highly processed, refined carbohydrates are often what we crave. So the cookies, appetizers, and holiday desserts will likely be calling your name.

So what can we do about this? Here’s a couple of things to keep in mind…

Did you know that Lipedema has a tendency to progr

Did you know that Lipedema has a tendency to progress during times of estrogen highs and lows? This includes things like puberty, pregnancy, and menopause.

But why does this happen? To understand the answer, we must first understand all of the things estrogen does in our bodies.

⭐️ It helps regulate the size and number of our fat cells.

⭐️ It directs where fat is stored on the body.

⭐️Plays a part in lipid metabolism.

So with all of that said, when someone is estrogen-dominant, or has high levels of estrogen it can cause inflammation, fluid retention, and other hormonal conditions such as PCOS. This can cause a progression in lipedema.

When estrogen is low in the body (perimenopause and menopause) we start to see changes in our body fat and start to accumulate more visceral fat. Insulin sensitivity also decreases, and fat cells become inflamed. This also can cause a surge in the progression of lipedema.

🚨 So what’s the bottom line here? While it might seem that it’s just about estrogen - it’s really about a hormonal imbalance. When our hormones (like estrogen) are out of whack, it causes a cascade of other problems in the body.

This is helpful to know so that you’ll know what to expect at different times of life that cause hormonal shifts in the body!

Leaky gut and lipedema… what’s the connection?

Let’s dig into this topic for a minute, but first - what is leaky gut?

Leaky gut is when the permeability of the intestinal lining changes and it allows toxins to get into our bloodstream. In a healthy gut, the intestinal lining will normally block these toxins from entering the bloodstream.

So how does this relate to lipedema?

1️⃣ Well, when toxins or anything else that shouldn’t be in the bloodstream is present, the body sends out inflammatory triggers. This increases the amount of histamines and other inflammatory markers in the body. And what does inflammation do for lipedema? It causes the progression of common symptoms like swelling and pain.

2️⃣ Another thing that happens is that over time people with leaky gut will notice GI distress such as gut dysbiosis and nutrient absorption.

3️⃣ And last, it lowers overall immunity making you more susceptible to getting sick and feeling unwell.

So how do we prevent this? One of the best ways to prevent leaky gut (and many other health ailments) is to consume adequate fiber. Fiber feeds the gut and keeps us healthy!

🚨 Most Americans only consume between 10-13 grams of fiber per day. We need at least 20-25 grams of fiber daily as a bare minimum.

So, what’s the takeaway? Eat your fiber ladies! It will help prevent leaky gut and reduce inflammation.
