👋 I’m Bonnie Newlin, a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist living with Stage 2 Lipedema, Lymphedema, and MCAS.⁣

⭐ Before my diagnoses, I naturally lost 170 lbs by building sustainable habits and changing my relationship with food. My highest recorded weight was 321 lbs (size 28). I’m 5’6” for reference.⁣

💦 Your lymphatic system doesn’t have a pump. Unlike your heart, it relies on muscle contraction to move lymph fluid. When you move, your muscles help push lymph through vessels, supporting fluid balance, immune regulation, and tissue health.
But it goes deeper.
When muscles contract, they release signaling proteins called myokines. These messengers help guide immune cells into lymphatic vessels, support vessel structure, and regulate immune activity in lymph nodes. Some even cross the blood-brain barrier, influencing inflammation, mood, and nervous system balance.
🚨 This matters in lipedema, where chronic inflammation and immune dysregulation are part of the tissue environment.
Movement isn’t just about burning calories. It’s immune communication.
It also works best alongside:
💧 Hydration (supports lymph fluid dynamics)

Today is World Lymphedema Day! 💙

So many Lippy Ladies also deal with Lymphedema, so I thought this would be a good opportunity to take a moment to talk about this condition.

Many of the symptoms are similar to lipedema, so it’s easy to get them confused.

To understand Lymphedema, we must first understand what the lymphatic system does. This system carries approximately two liters of fluid through the body to either be excreted as waste or into the bloodstream to be used as nutrients.

When the lymphatic system is impaired by lymphedema, fluid can accumulate in the body’s tissues, leading to swelling, pain, and inflammation.

One way to help support your lymphatic system is by staying very well hydrated. This will thin out lymph fluid and make it easier to travel through the body.

New research is beginning to recognize something women with lipedema have known for years.

Managing lipedema requires more than simple lifestyle advice.

A recent study (presented by Lise Maren Kloosterman, PhD.) developed the first evidence-based self-management program specifically for people with lipedema.

Researchers found that effective management goes beyond diet or exercise alone and requires building practical self-management skills.

The intervention focuses on improving:
• Knowledge about lipedema and its impact

• Confidence in managing symptoms

• Goal setting and self-monitoring for flexibility in routine

• Decision-making and planning to adjust progress

• Emotional regulation and resilience in the journey

• Support from healthcare professionals and peers

A comprehensive lipedema program includes individual sessions, group support, and education workshops covering topics such as movement, nutrition, and coping with stigma and self-image. What this means for women with lipedema is that -

✔ Education about lipedema matters

✔ Support systems matter to succeed

✔ Building sustainable habits matters more than quick fixes

✔ Small goals and consistent actions matter in creating a lifestyle

Lipedema is a complex chronic condition. Empowering women with knowledge, skills, and support may be one of the most important tools for improving long-term health and quality of life.

As research continues to evolve, the focus is shifting from simply “treating symptoms” to helping women develop the tools to manage their health every day.

Lipedema May Also Affect Muscle

Lipedema is often described as a disorder of fat tissue, but emerging research suggests the story is more complex.

Scientists are now studying how lipedema fat communicates with nearby muscle and how inflammation may influence strength, energy production, and fatigue.

Research suggests several important mechanisms:

• Inflammation from lipedema tissue may impact muscle. Chronic inflammation in lipedema fat can send signals that reduce muscle efficiency and performance.

• Fat may accumulate inside muscle fibers. This process, called myosteatosis, means fat deposits develop within muscle tissue, which can reduce strength and endurance.

• Muscle size does not equal strength. Even when legs appear large or strong, muscle function may be reduced. This is known as dynapenia — loss of strength without loss of muscle mass.

• Mitochondria may function less efficiently. Inflammation and fat infiltration can interfere with cellular energy production, which may contribute to the heaviness and fatigue many women with lipedema report.

• Pain can create a cycle. Pain and inflammation reduce movement, which over time can worsen muscle strength and metabolic health.

While this research is not directly about nutrition, the biology helps explain why certain strategies matter.

Adequate protein intake supports muscle repair, strength, and metabolic health. Many women benefit from 25–30g of protein per meal to support muscle protein synthesis.

Anti-inflammatory nutrition also plays a role, as chronic inflammation in lipedema tissue may influence muscle function.

And importantly, extreme dieting is not the answer. Severe calorie restriction can worsen fatigue, accelerate muscle loss, and slow metabolism.

Movement matters too. When muscles contract, they release signaling proteins called myokines that help regulate inflammation, metabolism, and immune signaling.

Nutrition fuels this system. When we nourish muscle, we support the lymphatic, metabolic, and immune systems working together.

Jean-Paul Belgrado, PhD. from Université libre de Bruxelles presented research using the Batolisa assessment framework for lipedema, offering clinicians a more structured toolbox for evaluating lymphatic function.

One of the most interesting tools discussed was occlusion imaging, which allows researchers to observe how lymphatic vessels respond when fluid flow is temporarily restricted and then released.

This type of testing helps evaluate the functional capacity of the lymphatic system rather than just looking at structure.

In lipedema, findings suggest slower lymphatic transport velocity toward the lymph nodes. Over time, this reduced efficiency may contribute to what researchers describe as the “fatigability” of the lymphatic system, meaning the lymphatics may struggle to keep up with chronic fluid and inflammatory load.

Understanding lymphatic fatigability helps explain why many women with lipedema experience progressive swelling, tissue changes, and, in later stages, may develop secondary lymphedema (lipo-lymphedema).

Better assessment tools like occlusion imaging and Batolisa scoring move the field forward by helping clinicians with the following:

• Assess lymphatic function earlier
• Track disease progression
• Identify when lymphatic support
strategies may be needed

Lipedema research is advancing, and objective tools like these are helping bring greater clarity to diagnosis and monitoring lipedema over time.

It’s really easy to get bogged down in the minor details. You know, those things that “feel important” but really don’t move the needle like we want them to. These “extras” aren’t bad, but if you don’t have the basics down first, you’re likely going to struggle. ⁣
